Ensign Nancy Simon, Ensign Miriam Christie

I’ve never understood the social convention of the way people will just say to you “you got a hair cut!” granted, some people say “nice haircut” or “the new haircut looks good” but lots of people just announce it.  I tend to respond with “no, I got them all cut,” but this comic and next weeks offers a few other options.

Noticing at all is better than nothing. I went out with a woman a couple of times, and had sideburns the first time. She advised me to cut them off, but when I did and met her again, she didn’t even notice.

Regarding your response, Doc, it’s the other way around for me; when my mother or sister announces “I had my my hair cut”, I usually respond by saying “which one?”

Yeah, the message is not “I can observe the world around me” but rather “I pay enough attention to you that I have observed this relatively minor change in your appearance (and am confident that I have noticed it at my earliest opportunity, so am happy to let you know without fear that it’s actually a change I should have noticed some time ago)”.

It’s more like saying “I see you” than it is like saying “water is wet”

What gets me is “Did you get a haircut?” I tend to go a long time between haircuts, so it’s usually pretty obvious when I get one. Next time someone asks me, I might just say, “No, my scalp has started pulling my hair back into itself.”
