Commander Belinda Reines

"These are not the morons you're looking for."--Belinda Reines concerning Johnny Danger, Robin Cunningham, and Skip Tyler.

Belinda Reines is the chief medical officer on the Alliance Star Ship Muffin. She is an accomplished doctor of both human and alien physiology as well as a veterinarian. She is also a Jedi Master and a member of the Jedi Council. She often comes off as cold and emotionless but this stems mostly from the fact that she grew up quickly and has focused a majority of her life on intellectual and spiritual pursuits rather than emotional connections. She is sarcastic and quick to anger, though she is usually able to bring her anger into check.

Biography

Early Childhood

Belinda Olivia Reines was born to a Space Pirate father, Agamemnon "Red" Beard and a Jedi Master mother, Wilhelmina Reines, her father left fairly early in her life and she was raised by her mother and a set of Jedi values. Belinda was a child prodigy, finishing high school by the age of 12, college by 14, and achieving her first Ph.D. by age 19. In addition to her studies she also began training as a Jedi at the age of 5 as was the tradition of her mother's family. She was often criticized for splitting her attention between medicine and being a Jedi, however all of these criticisms were silenced when she continued to graduate at the top of her class and outdo all of her fellow padawan.

The Incident at Targo 9

When Belinda was 12 she was assigned to Jedi Master Maz who trained her in the use of the double lightsaber. Shortly after becoming a padawan, Belinda and her master were paired with Jedi Master Roland Tobias and his apprentice Gorik Dalgo, a promising young padawan trained in the two lightsaber technique. The two often spared and formed more of a rivalry than a friendship. Both students and their masters were sent to investigate a disturbance on the planet Targo 9 where Both Maz and Gorik met their end at the hands of former Jedi Master Koz who had turned to the dark side. Though it was Tobias who discovered Koz next to Gorik's body, Belinda never saw Koz until many years later. Afterward Belinda was instrumental in saving the life of Senator Togli of Targo 9 and his aide when the ship returning from Targo 9 was destroyed by a Sith device. Devastated by the loss of her master Belinda almost gave into depression until Master Tobias requested that she be transferred to him to continue her training. The Jedi council thought it best as Tobias, who was versed both in Jedi ways and in scientific theory, might aide Belinda in both her tasks. Though Roland insisted they spend much of their time in his precious library Belinda was able to gain some field experience and achieved the rank of Jedi Knight by the time she was 16.

Secondary Education

By choosing to do her Ph.D. work on Zerogravity Neurosurgery Belinda was able to travel much of the galaxy and train as a Jedi Knight at the same time. During this time she was also able to hone her abilities as a pilot and improve her survival skills. She also trained two padawan apprentices while exploring the galaxy.
By 2339 she had finished her Ph.D. and attained the rank of Jedi Master. At this point she returned to Earth to gain a veterinary degree and began training her third padawan apprentice. Over the course of the next 10 years she gained four more degrees, in veterinary medicine, human medicine, alien medicine and another Ph.D. She also continued to travel much of the galaxy and trained a total of six padawan apprentices.

Field Medicine, Jedi Mastery, and the Most Painful Test

Belinda Reines, Jedi Master

In 2340 Belinda became a member of the Jedi Council and a field medic for the Alliance. In 2345 Belinda was called to Bushido by the Shinobi Council to deal with a Sith identified as Darth Vulgaris. The Jedi Council felt sending Belinda was best as it was a Sith purported to have bested every Ninja sent at him, making him an extremely skilled swordsman as the Space Ninjas had never needed help against a Sith. After her shuttle was shot down over Bushido Belinda was left to wander across the planet and in a snow fallen grove encountered Darth Vulgaris. She instantly recognized him as Gorik Dalgo, her old rival whom she had thought dead, and after a brief exchange they fell into combat. Belinda and Gorik faced each other in a devastating showdown which left Belinda battered and nearly broken. In Gorik's triumph, however, he exposed himself to a final attack. With what energy Belinda had left she cut him in half and sent him spiraling into an abyss. Again she thought him dead, though he survived, but was shunned by the Dark Council and his master for his failure. After months of recovery and time in the Jedi Library with her old master she again stepped out into the galaxy. She was promoted quickly through the ranks of the Alliance and by 2349 found herself with the rank of Commander as chief medical officer on board the Muffin.

Chief Medical Officer

(:thumb Fans./SeeingRed.jpg width=200 captionfmt="Belinda faces off against Marty after his fall to the dark side." align=right:) As the stoic and knowledgeable chief medical officer of the Muffin Belinda has been responsible for repairing the damage to most of the crew. They discovered into their voyages that like Martin Jasper, Belinda was a Jedi, however unlike Marty, Belinda was Jedi Master and very capable in the Force and in the use of her double lightsaber. This discovery was made when she was forced to confront her old padawan, Tiffany, now Darth Tiffany. She fought Tiffany to a retreat but the young dark sider vowed revenge on her old master.

The Search for Koz

When certain suspicions surfaced Belinda made it her obligation to track down what she realized the true identity of the President of the Alliance, going so far as to track down exiled Jedi/dark sider Koz on the planet Zerka. On Zerka she was tricked by Koz and found herself at the controls of the Ancient computer? which prevented the use of technology on the planet. Residual energy from the machine seemed to enter her unnoticed as she returned to fight Koz and finally at the base of the mountain she tore the information she needed from Koz's mind and killed Koz when she turned her back on him and he attacked.

The Fall of the Jedi

Belinda ran to the Jedi Council to tell them what she had discovered only to find that they had no interest in her news which left her despondent and angry. On her way back to her crew she intercepted a message to all Jedi and following it she found Marty on the planet Climatika, where he had fallen to the dark side and the two engaged in lightsaber combat. Unwilling to kill her friend she instead chose to escape when she could see no way of subduing him.

Moving On

After returning to the ship Belinda took up the task of training former Sith, Angrius and eventually programed the Holodeck to give him the likeness of Jedi Master Tuggywuggylon as a teaching aide. Their training was interrupted, however, by the arrival of her old master, Roland Tobias and his new apprentice Iadgo Tellal. They came to warn the ship about the need to search for the Saber of Ages and Belinda, along with others of the crew set out to do this. Searching for a clue on Wok she encountered her old apprentice, Chthwurka and two padawans. She also encountered Marty again, now as Darth Noyance and combat ensued. Though she and the other Jedi lost the fight they were not killed and Belinda quickly went back to the ship in hopes of beating Creepius to the Saber of Ages.
It was regrettably not so that she failed in this task during a massive fight between the Jedi and the Sith Creepius obtained the Saber of Ages, and Belinda's mentor, Mater Tobias, was killed in combat with Palpatine. Though she grew despondent at first, and more so when Tobias returned as a force ghost she has not yet given up.

As companion of the Doctor

After the Battle of the The Doctor invites Belinda to travel through time with him in the TARDIS. He takes her back to her childhood where she finds out why her father left her and her mother. She witnesses a meeting of the First Ones and travels over 40 years to the future where Skip brings about the end of the Alliance. Later the Doctor takes her to the year 2360 where she breaks her future self out of a cell. Then she helps the Doctor defeat Ben Noah Clooner. He also shows her the End of Time, before he finally takes her back home to her own time.

Personality Traits

(:thumb Fans./834n.jpg width=200 captionfmt="Belinda faces off against Darth Creepius." align=left:) Belinda grew up quickly, mostly of her own accord and has thus developed (or possibly always had) an extremely serious attitude. She is not, however, without a sense of humor. Her humor is more dry than the rest of the crew's and is often not understood. She has a short temper, especially with those who are stupid, and she is quick to exact retribution for her annoyance. She is one of the most powerful Jedi in the order and her power appears to be growing, she is also one of the most accomplished medical specialists in the Alliance and does not appear to be content with the knowledge that she has, instead seeking to expand what she knows. Her bedside manner leaves something to be desired.

Powers and Abilities

Belinda is an extremely powerful Jedi and has a strong mastery of the Force. She is capable of great feats of telekinesis and tends to use her Force Powers during lightsaber combat. She is skilled at mind manipulation and has shown the ability to rip thoughts from people's minds. She is an excellent pilot and capable of holding her own in a space battle. Belinda is also an accomplished surgeon and doctor, she has a knack for bringing people back from the brink through a combination of modern medicine and Force Healing. Her Jedi powers appear to be growing recently and are possibly beyond what they were when last recorded by the Jedi Council.

Associations

Belinda has made a number of friends on the crew of the Muffin, most notably Shauna Finelli who she sees as an equal in her suffering the indignities of dealing with fools. It is thanks to Shauna that Belinda has the star fighter Lil' Bastard and her faithful droid Z0-MG.
Belinda also has a close friendship with the Captain, and she genuinely trusts his opinion and orders, even if she disagrees with them. She is less trusting of Marty, but sees him as the little brother she never had, making it most devastating to her when he turned to the Dark Side. She maintains a tenuous relationship with Dr. Malcom Notio and has a virulent hate for Dr. Walters. She tolerates Johnny, but just barely.
Belinda was a member of the Jedi Council until she was removed shortly before the council was killed by the Sith. She continues to practice as a Jedi, though it is currently a very dangerous practice.
Belinda had a wonderful relationship with her mother until her mother's disappearance and presumed death, it is only because she has not visited Belinda as a Force Ghost that Belinda believes her mother may still be alive.
Belinda's relationship with her father is far less cordial as she knows who he is even though he left her and her mother when she was very young.
She has had several apprentices over the years and maintains good relations with all but one.
Belinda is a member of many scientific societies and organizations and has trouble keeping up with all of their newsletters, so mostly she doesn't.

Behind the Scenes

  • Belinda is an amalgam of the personalities of the author's two best friends and a bit of her own characterization as well.
  • Having Amy Acker play Belinda just seemed to fit after seeing her Fred/Illyria change on Angel. Seeing her play a doctor on Dollhouse only confirms the choice.
