The Need for Speed

Plot Synopsis

A race across several planets draws a number of enthusiasts, including Shauna.

Plot Summary

When the 26th Planetcross was held the participants were Toklon Shami, Nuentil, Klesnikor, Anrok, Valko, and Shauna Finelli. Shauna had Belinda acting as her pit crew and Belinda questioned Shauna's sanity in participating in the event, which Shauna found confusing.
Elsewhere on the modified K12 mining ship? used as staging area for the races someone communicated with Sigmund Malvarone about killing someone in the race and making it look like an accident.
Kastilla Ragar, Toklon Shami's girlfriend and pit crew came by Shauna's rig to inspect the competition and found Belinda guarding it. When Kastilla would not leave Belinda ignited her lightsaber at which Kastilla laughed, saying that a Jedi would not attack her. Then Belinda ignited the other side and Kastilla realized exactly which Jedi she was dealing with and backed off. After the altercation Shauna admitted security was the real reason she had asked Belinda to be on her pit crew and before they could discuss it further the Coordinator called for all participants to get to their bikes.
The first section of the race took place on Frikin'Cold and initially Shauna had no trouble keeping up. In a set of caves the race passed through where contact was lost with their pit crews an explosion nearly knocked Shauna out of the race and out of the world of the living.
After the race Bob came to see Shauna and make sure everything was okay, at which point she admitted to him that people die in the races all the time, though active sabotage is new. Bob was angry that Shauna had not told him this before and she simply brushed it off as she thought it was something she had already informed him about. Shauna expressed the fact that she had suspicions about who had tried to kill her.
During the second race, on Anoli, a boulder came loose and almost landed on Shauna and her bike but she was saved by Klesnikor who was, in fact, a Jedi, and carried a lightsaber installed on his bike. Back at the staging ship Shauna expressed her thanks to Klesnikor and Belinda admitted that the two were old friends. Shauna was somewhat despondent since he had been her first suspect, however. The race coordinator appeared and told the racers to resolve the problem, including who was trying to kill Shauna.
Tired of waiting around for another attempt on her life, Shauna used herself as bait, wandering the halls alone until her assassin made their move. Once Nuentil did make the move Belinda and Klesnikor made theirs and apprehended him. Once he was captured the Coordinator came by to figure out what was going on and Belinda suggested that while he admitted to all of the attempts on Shauna's life she couldn't understand why he would admit to the first two, when she knew he wasn't responsible for those. The Coordinator panicked and ran when it was revealed that Nuentil had ratted him out but he found himself face to face with Bob and the other racers when he tried to make an escape.
Director Muurgen came in to officiate the last leg of the race and congratulate Shauna on solving the problem. Though her friends were skeptical about it Shauna still decided to finish the last leg of the race. Kathar was as uneventful as a planet of molten lava can be and while Shauna did not win, she did not come in last (that honor when to Nuentil, who had been disqualified), she did make some new friends in the other racers and was invited to compete again the following year.
