Look Who's Coming to Dinner

Plot Synopsis

When Robin, Skip, and TAG's escape pod? is picked up by a bumpkinian ship? they must fight for their lives or be eaten by the cannibalistic people.

Plot Summary

While drifting in space in their escape pod, Robin, Skip and TAG start discussing how hungry they have become, citing that Robin would be willing to eat chicken from Village Inn, a suggestion that he was so hungry he would accept food poisoning just to eat. The sensors in the pods notify them that there is a ship approaching and they speculate as to the nature of whomever is about to pick them up. They realize slightly too late that the door to the pod is on the ceiling and the whole structure tips over so that they can be released. When the hatch opens they are dismayed to discover that they have been picked up by the cannibalisitic bumpkinians.
Robin and Skip find themselves standing in a pot of boiling water as the bumpkinains prepare to eat them for dinner. They speculate about the fact that the aliens speak english and that they are perhaps somehow connected to people of the American Midwest (though anywhere could be used). They try to formulate a plan of escape and Robin distracts them by having them look in the direction of after several attempts, other hermaphrodites. Having escaped with their lives they ponder the fact that they are still slightly hungry.
After speculating about how the other members of the crew are doing and the alarms start going off indicating their escape they meet up with TAG who tricked his captors into thinking he was merely a figment of their imagination as they had drank far too much of their own homemade alcohol. TAG indicates that he has contacted his people and while Robin shows doubt that they can be of any help TAG reminds him of how he managed to escape.
While they are distracted a bumpkinian sneaks up behind Robin and with a knife to his throat suggest that he should squeal like a tharkalian pig, and animal Robin is not familiar with the sound of. As bumpkinian arrives to help capture them TAG informs them that his people are on their way.
As the nuzzalari attack Robin, Skip, and TAG wonder if they realize that they are aboard the ship. The nuzzalari Captain chides them for being so easily captured by the bumpkinians and they feel sorry for themselves. Their spirits quickly rise as the board the nuzzalari ship? and think that at last they will have quarters that will not be as cramped as the escape pod. They are, of course, mistaken.

References and Allusions

  • Bumpkinians are meant to represent a caricature similar to the one presented in the film Deliverance.
  • Village Inn is a restaurant in the midwest at which one the Author's friends acquired food poisoning from the chicken. In their defense he commented that it tasted rancid, but continued to eat it.
