The Algebra of Shadows

Plot Synopsis

The crew roam around Deep Babylon 8 and get into trouble while a new ship? is built for them.

Plot Summary

When the Captain goes to meet with the station commander he tells his crew not to get into too much trouble, a comment directed primarily at Marty as Johnny has not yet arrived. As predicted the crew (specifically Robin and Skip) get into trouble instantly but Belinda is able to get them out of it using the Jedi mind trick. Captain Smith meets with Captain Sherman and his first officer Commander Villanova who quickly corrects her captain that they are no longer on Deep Babylon 7 but on 8. Captain Sherman then goes into detail about how the previous stations were lost but gets a little bit lost himself in the telling. Captain Smith questions Captain Sherman's assignment but Sherman assures him that it is the best place for him and after Bob starts to make some comments about stations being constantly replaced General Graves appears to tell him the Muffin is to be rebuilt. With the construction of the new ship under way the General suggest that the crew take some time off and relax.
Marty and Robin attempt to make fun of Johnny for visiting his mother, however he already admits to being a momma's boy so the jokes have little effect and when the Captain returns he informs all of them that they can take some time off either on the station or elsewhere.
Much to Shauna's dismay, Alice drags her to a salon to get their hair done. At the hair salon they are treated to a rather expensive and entire ineffectual change in hairstyles by the master arist. Shauna is none too happy with the results. The boys simply do not understand the problem.
Johnny, Robin, and Skip attempt to take in a strip club, however those were not the females they were looking for and the Captain attempts to reconcile with Shauna over her hair and as things get better Conway interrupts. When security tries to remove Conway, however Shauna convinces him that Conway is in fact an ambassador.
Red, on the other hand meets an ambassador of his own, and that ambassador's bodyguard eats him. Inside the creature's belly he meets up with his cousin D. B. Guy and they are both soon freed, though somewhat less gracefully than they would like by Marty. Red then introduces D. B. to the others and they learn about his sensitivity to his name and speculate on how Red and D. B. are related given their differing appearance. Red quickly suggests to D. B. that he should join the crew when the ship is completed and D. B. accepts.
Johnny, Skip, and Robin play to go to the planet MTV for spring break while Marty heads to Dagobah for further training with Master Yoda and Belinda and Alice head to a scientific conference on Tau Ceti V.

Critical Reception

There are those who are still angry about Shauna's change of hair.
