History
The dream of instantaneous transport from one spot on a planet to another or beyond was an ever present one, and though many devices allowed for long distance transport over the years, the conversion of matter to energy and back again was a significant leap in the area of travel.
Construction
Conversion of matter to energy and back was relatively simple, but required a great deal of power and precision if it was intended that the object retain the shape that it had before transport afterward.
