I modeled the ship after the Enterprise-D, it’s a bit amazing it took me this long to throw in a ship separation. TNG did it in their pilot episode.

Yeah, but TNG had to do it in the pilot or they wouldn’t get the effects budget to do it at all. They wouldn’t even have had an engineering set if they hadn’t shoehorned in a scene there. The land of network TV production is a strange place.
